Only a few of us probably have a clear vision of Portugal as a country. Thus, I am pretty excited to talk about this. As I mentioned before, I am studying in Portugal, in a small city. Nevertheless, the university in this city is really advanced.

To start with, it is important to talk about the food, as for portuguese people it is not just a meal but the religion. In here, people drop all the staff at work and return home just to have a lunch or a dinner. During the meal they have a special ceremony of drinking wine according to the palette of flavours and usually accomplish the meal with a small wineglass of port wine. You will be really surprised to find out that the Portuguese wine is really the best one you have tasted , as many of us consider French or Italian wine being the best in the world. Almost every region in Portugal has its own wine depending on kind of the grapes. I highly recommend Vinho do Douro or wine from Vila Real.

People in Portugal really appreciate excellent quality food when choosing a good bife de vitela (cow steak) or peixe grelhado (fresh grilled sea fish).

If you will have an opportunity to visit Portugal during summer, do not forget to try grilled sardines and other sea food.

When it comes to desert, they normally prefer something light as for example mousse de chocolate (chocolate mousse), pudim de ovos (egg pudding), baba de camelo (caramel mousse) or such fruits as mangoes, figs, oranges and pineapples.

Also just in Portugal you will be able to try pastel de nata (custard tarts).

It is also important to mention the original portuguese dish called Francesinha. Basically, it is a big sandwich with steak and ham inside covered with melted cheese and they serve it with special sauce which reminds a tomato ones. Portuguese people enjoy eating that with dipping batatas fritas (french fries) in the sauce. No doubts that it may seems like not really healthy food, but, trust me, you will never forget the delicious and unique taste of this dish.

No one can argue that we can talk about food for ages, however the best way to explore the traditional cuisine is to try it! :)
