As you know so far I am currently living in Portugal in a tiny city in northern part called Bragança. The city organization itself has rural roots which of course benefits your alimentation.

During last year I had a chance to visit many other cities all over Portugal and encounter the local spirit together along with language features, traditions, mentality, customs and surely local high quality food. What is more my everyday communication include interaction with locals (usually people older than me;)

Frankly speaking, before coming to Portugal I could not even imagine how bright and unique this country is. Hence, I would like to create a guide list which will definitely help you to have a focus on the essentials while travelling to Portugal.

1.English is my magic wand

Do not panic if your attend of establishing English dialogue is not going to work. While checking out some other blogs of people sharing their experience about Portugal, I have noticed that many of them claim that local citizens speak English very well. Well, no doubts if you are talking about big cities. Nevertheless, small cities in Portugal are also worth visiting and usually people there don't speak English very well.

In this case I will give you some tip: no matter what your mother language is try to use words that come from Latin. For instance instead of using «freedom», use «liberty» which originate from «libertatem» and sounds in Portuguese «liberdade».

2. Taking small steps

In case you have already learned some Portuguese words or phrases try to involve them in you daily conversation with natives. Remember, when you are visiting another country people will consider it a great honour and a sign of respect that you dedicated your own time to learn their language.

3. If you are late you are in time

Have you ever heard that Spanish and Portuguese are always late? Well, this statement is half true half nonsense. When we are talking about personal meetings with your friends, colleagues or relatives, people in Portugal don't mainly consider being late as a big deal. Although, regarding doctor appointments, official meetings, interviews and other strictly scheduled encounters, I would highly recommend you to show up in time.

4. Caffeine overdose

If you will come to Portugal, you probably notice that after each meal locals drink a small cup of coffee. Surely you can go ahead and implement this habit, but keep in mind that you need to be careful about huge amount of caffeine especially when it goes about dinner. Here is a small tip: after dinner Portuguese typically order «descafeinado» or simply decaf. With this smart idea you don't need to refuse from a late night coffee and you will be also able to sleep tight at night.

5. Dish of the day

If you ever catch a chance to have lunch or dinner at the restaurant you will probably be overwhelming with the decision of food. In case you are really into travelling on budget without suffering, here is a really valuable tip which you will hardly discover by yourself. Simply try to order the dish of the day or «prato do dia». Generally, this dish contains the most fresh and seasonal ingredients, is not so expensive and is popular amount locals. But don't just blindly order without asking what dish it will be. Otherwise, it ends with having liver or pig's ears for lunch.;)

6. Contribute to family business

While being abroad people are seeking for food by exploring local supermarkets considering themselves it is a cheaper alternative. Generally, Portugal reckon many tiny family businesses which are famous for local high quality organic food products. In addition, these types of stores are supplied by local farmers with fruits and vegetables who set the prices cheaper than the supermarket chains.

I sincerely hope that all the tips will help you to enjoy your trip and make it less complicated. If you will like to know more interesting facts about Portugal, just write me a comment.
